melbourne fringe festival gobo competition

Winning gobo design goes off on a Tangent

Gideon Cheok's design "Tangent" was selected as the winner of the Melbourne Fringe Festival Gobo Design Competition. Entries for the inaugural competition, part of Resolution X's sponsorship of the Fringe Festival, were required to be based on the theme of "Angle".

"I have found that going off in tangents has helped me both personally and commercially in the design field," says Gideon. "The reason why I take this left-field approach is because I have so many ideas floating in my head. This is what is represented in my gobo design."

Gideon, at age 21, is currently working in design, and studying for a Bachelor of Design (Multimedia Design) Honours at Monash University. He is unsure exactly how he will use his prize of $500 worth of lighting hire from Resolution X, but he is considering using it to showcase his honours design project.

The design is being made into a metal-on-glass gobo that will be projected across the façade of the Federation Square complex, every night from the official Switch On Ceremony on September 24th, until October 2nd.

Gideon's views on lighting and design are forthright, although they may not endear him to everyone in the lighting community:

A wise lecturer once told me-
How many designers does it take to change a light bulb?
A designer would say "does it have to be a light bulb?"
